The Fat Cell and Fat Storage

Fat loss is your choice and coul even be a priority to enjoying better health.  The following unravels the mystifying web of fat, food and fitness.

Physiological or Psychological?

The physiology surrounding fat loss is fascinating and complex. It is affected by genetics, gender, diet, fitness and lifestyle, even environment (people, However, don’t underestimate the influence that years of social conditioning may have had on your thought processes, choices and behaviour.
Social conditioning often starts from infancy and traditionally there has tended to be one set of standards for males and another for females. For example, these comments concerning two babies who look exactly the same: “He is a big boy” and “She is a chubby little thing”. After 20 or more years of similar conditioning, exaggerated by the media, it is no wonder that we have a population of men wanting to be ‘bigger’ and women wanting to be ‘thinner’. Of course, this is a gross generalisation and we need to appreciate the underlying psychology and emotional attachment surrounding body image if we are to be able to develop healthy attitudes and behavioural choices that will work forever, not just for 6 weeks or 6 months, and thereby promote healthy living for life.
Add life to your years and even add years to your life, I’ll work with your Subconscious Mind and Conscious Mind as well as your body.

A Western Worry

With greater access to ‘refined’ processed food of high fat content, together with energy saving devices reducing everyday physical activity, obesity has become a big problem in western cultures. In the UK, 58% of men and 49% of women are considered overweight or obese (Health Education Authority figures 10 years ago; now the situation is actually worse).

Although a lot of attention, in the media and elsewhere, is focussed on the aesthetics of low body fat, I must stress the importance of associated health benefits such as lowered risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and hypertension.

Unfortunately, losing fat is not always easy and is often confounded by misleading information. The traditional weight loss model, focussing on an energy deficit (less calories consumed, more calories burnt, ie. eat less, do more), does not work so straightforwardly for the majority of people as many diets are too restrictive and/or inflexible to be a lifelong option, and not all calories are equal nor do they have the same effect on our metabolism and fat storage. The first step towards a better understanding of fat loss is to update our knowledge of fat physiology.
